GRADE 5Emphasis for this class is on Torah and being Partners with God in Repairing the World. Students study the lives of ancient, medieval and modern Jews who are role models for Tikkun Olam (making the world a better place). They will be taking a more active role in their home, Temple school, and community to repair the world (Tikkun Olam). They will develop a personal sense of right and wrong in the context of Jewish ethics and tradition. A systematic introduction to T'filah, Hebrew prayer, begins in the 4th grade. Hebrew instruction will continue on Tuesday afternoons. Zionism and Israel will be studied through various media. GRADE 6The sixth grade curriculum is the in-depth study of Torah, through text, commentary and midrash; the whole of the Torah, its stories and characters, its laws and rules. Students are taught different ways of studying Torah and are encouraged to place themselves in the shoes of Biblical figures and the circumstances they found themselves in, and to find modern meaning in the Mitzvot the Torah contains. Torah is studied not only through reading, workbook activities and discussion, but through simulations, mock trials and the writing on Midrashim. Each student is encouraged to help lead discussion of the Torah portion he/she has been assigned for his/her upcoming Bar or Bat Mitzvah, and to participate in other Torah study opportunities provided by the religious school and Temple. The other part of the sixth grade curriculum deals with Jewish life-cycle traditions and beliefs relating to them. The course covers areas of birth and naming, B'rit Mila, Bar/Bar Mitzvah, marriage, divorce, aging, death and mourning. Time is spent on a variety of teen issues. Students learn through reading and discussion, workshops, worksheets, films and art projects. A number of community speakers are utilized relating to all aspects of the curriculum and the students go on field trips as well. The students also plan and carry out a mock wedding. GRADE 7Students in the seventh grade study the Prophets, Laws and Values. They examine key issues facing the lives of teenage Jewish men and women, through Biblical text and Jewish laws and ethical standards. Students are encouraged, through readings, discussions, films and guest speakers, to examine questions relating to the Jewish sexual ethic, to substance abuse, relationships with family members and peers, to the concept of dissent and prophecy, to working for justice, coping with tragedy, and ultimately towards being a whole person, a mensch. GRADE 8 Our Eighth Grade program meets on Tuesdays from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM. This year of post-B'nai Mitzvah learning focuses on understandings of God, Jewish history, community service, and ethics. All registered students are also eligible to work as aides in Sunday Religious School. The class is taught by Rabbi Sharff and meets in his office. |
