Temple Emanu-El was proud to host Tucson's first Interfaith Solar Day on Sunday, October 14th. Organized by the office of Congressman Ron Barber, the event brought together community leaders and some of the most innovative places of worship in the greater Tucson area, each of which has installed a solar energy system. Temple Emanu-El's solar installation has been active producing energy since the spring of 2012.
Rabbi Samuel M. Cohon kicked off the event with an invocation that reflected the tie between Genesis and renewable energy by noting, "And God saw that human beings had begun to use the light that God had given in ways that created blessing." Congressman Barber welcomed attendees and underscored the importance of solar energy to the local economy. James MacAdam, representing the office of Tucson Mayor Jonathan Rothschild, moderated a roundtable discussion that explored why each house went solar, its positive financial impact, and the deeper meaning of a clean-energy future to people of faith. Carmine Tilghman, Director – Renewable Energy Resources at Tucson Electric Power, and Kevin Koch of Technicians for Sustainability noted opportunities and roadblocks ahead for additional solar energy to come on line in the Tucson area. An impressive display took place near Temple Emanu-El's solar array, featuring the University of Arizona solar car, electric vehicles, and a solar truck from Isabella's ice cream.
Additional participating organizations included the Unitarian Universalist Church of Tucson, Pantano Christian Church, St. Philips in the Hills, St. Francis in the Valley, Our Mother of Sorrows, St. Francis in the Hills, the City of Tucson, and the Tucson Electric Vehicle Association.
While a number of attendees viewed it through a special telescope lens, the sun could not be reached for comment.
