New class on Lamentations; the High Holy Day Choir

The other day, one of my students and I were preparing to read from the Torah scroll. As I placed the undressed Torah on the Torah table, I remarked to my student that he would have to find the yad before we began to read.

"What's that ?" he asked, luminously.

Jerry Duran, the non-Jewish supervisor of the maintenance staff who happened to be setting up sound equipment at the time, said " It's the pointer." He probably could have told us that the Hebrew word 'yad' means hand, and that the yad is usually shaped like a hand with a pointing, index finger, but Jerry is a man of few words who doesn't like to show off. It just goes to show, it's amazing what you can learn just by showing up!

Summer at Temple Emanu-El has many opportunities for learning and growth for all who wish to expand the breadth and depth of their Jewish knowledge. In June, Rabbi Cohon is teaching a three-week class on the chant of Eycha-Lamentations on Thursdays, at 7:30 pm on June 13th, 20th , and 27th. If you read Hebrew, and would like to extend your knowledge to learning this beautiful trope, call the Temple office or return the flyer included in this bulletin to register. The charge for the class is $30 for members, $50 for non-members.

Believe it or not, it is already time to begin preparing for the Days of Awe. If you have ever sung before, now is the time to sign up for the High Holiday Choir! Call Harriet Cowhey at 882-9467 for complete information. The High Holiday Choir is an experience that calls for a limited commitment, but brings big rewards! Call today.
