Musical Notes
One of the acts of gemilut chasidim, acts of loving kindness, that is most rewarding is bikkur cholim, visiting the sick. This July, Temple Emanu-El members have a unique opportunity to fulfill this mitzvah, and to help others in need by volunteering to participate in Tihan's July POZ Cafe. TIHAN, the Tucson Interfaith HIV-AIDS Network, is an organization whose mission is to end the stigma around HIV-AIDS and whose members are composed of representatives from Tucson faith communities. Volunteers from member churches and synagogues provide all kinds of programs and volunteer assistance to people with AIDS, ranging from direct support in the form of Care teams that provide counseling, friendship, respite care and other assistance to individual clients and their families, to participation in fundraisers, memorial services and other events. These events and contacts tend to break down the barriers between those who suffer with HIV- AIDS and those in religious communities who may otherwise stigmatize them. As a TIHAN partner, Temple Emanu-El is participating in one of the most popular volunteer activities for TIHAN clients with HIV-AIDS: The Poz Cafe. The Poz cafe is a monthly lunch on the third Thursday of the month (July 18th) from 12:00 noon to 3:00 pm at St. Francis in the Foothills Church. As the "Hosts," Temple members are only responsible for providing, setting up, and serving the food. TIHAN volunteers manage everything outside the kitchen, from setting up the tables, checking in guests, planning a game, discussion, or other event, and cleaning up. Medical breakthroughs have helped many with HIV/AIDS to live longer and better lives, but drugs cannot cure the physical and social isolation of the chronically ill. Poz Cafe helps to fill a deep need of HIV positive adults-the need for socialization, conversation and fun. Help fill this need with other Temple members and me this July!
