Musical NotesOctober 2003From the Desk of Marjorie HochbergOn August 9th, Jerry Duran, a dear friend and trusted caretaker of the Temple, died in his sleep in his caretaker's apartment. For all who knew Jerry, it was a terrible blow. Following the shock of his death, and in the wake of his Catholic funeral and memorial service here at Temple Emanu-El the Temple board and staff have sought to find a concrete and meaningful way to honor Jerry's memory. Jerry took his position of Caretaker very seriously. He was always here taking care of the building, the grounds, and of us. He always seemed to be present when someone came in to offer a warm greeting and a helping hand. No matter how busy he was, he had a way of making you feel like nothing was more important than you were at that moment. After a great deal of deliberation, we decided that the best memorial for Jerry would be to upgrade and beautify one of the entrances to the Temple where Jerry spent so much time: either the Kurn Religious School entrance or the breezeway at the West entrance to the Temple. The exact specifications of this project have yet to be determined, but we will strive to honor Jerry's memory with plans that achieve a heightened level of beauty, security and hospitality --the qualities he sought to promote every day. A fund has been established in Jerry's name to promote this purpose. Won't you contribute to the Gerald Duran Memorial Fund? Help us to make Jerry's memory a lasting blessing. |
