Hanukkah, O Hanukkah!

The Greatest Hanukkah on Earth!V

December 2003

From the Desk of Marjorie Hochberg

Although Hanukkah, the Fetival of Lights is characterized by flickering candles, one could say that here at Temple Emamu-El the holiday is initiated by fun, food, music and drama at the level of pyrotecnichs.  One of the year's most anticipated, popular and modestly titled events, The Greatest Hanukkah on Earth! V is Sunday, December 14th starting at 4:30 pm.  We begin by lighting the Hanukkah Menorah on Country Club Road, and continue in the Rubin Family Sanctuary with the most extraordinary Hanukkah program ever!  If last year you missed the Preschoolers twirling to the Calypso Dreidle song, the Drama Chug's Hanukkah parody of Hair (complete with the female Maccabettes), and our outstanding Temple Youth Choir singing in Hebrew, English, Yiddish and Ladino with incredible  Avanim Band,  you will never forgive yourself for missing an even better program this year.  Don't miss all the fun of the past, plus the added charm of the  Teen Choir, the Teen String Trio, and the new and improved Adult Choirs at this year's stellar show.   At the end of our afternoon of story, song , drama and dance, everyone is invited to  light his or her own Hanukkah menorah in our Sanctuary, creating a memorable scene of hundreds of Hanukkah lights.  While the candles burn, we will join in the Hanukkah blessings together.

As the candles continue to shine, we  will adjourn to the festively decorated Sy Juster Social Hall for a traditional Hanukkah feast catered by Rabbi David Freelund and friends.   Latkes and brisket are featured in this mouth-watering Hanukkah dinner.  Dinner is $20 per person (over age 12) for non-members of Temple, $16 for members, $6 for children aged 4-12, and free for children aged 3 and under. Congregants are still talking about last year's prize-winning brisket, so if you haven't made your dinner reservations, do no hesitate.  We will sell out.
