Musical NotesApril 2004From the Desk of Marjorie HochbergYom HaShoah In 1951, the Israeli Knesset designated the 27th day of Nisan as Yom HaShoah v’Hagvurah — a day to commemorate HaShoa, the Holocaust. On that day, Jews all over the world remember the victims of the Holocaust and celebrate its heroes. Here in Tucson, the Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC) sponsors a community-wide service that day in which all of Jewish Tucson participate with special readings, prayers, music and speakers. Holocaust survivors in our community participate in this service. Temple Emanu-El is honored to host this year’s service on Sunday April 18th at 2:00 pm. Rabbi Samuel M. Cohon, Rabbi David Freelund, the Temple Emanu-El Youth Choir and I will all participate in this year’s community observance. The theme of this year’s Commemoration is “Anti-Semitism Before and After the Holocaust,” and will feature a keynote speaker who was once the Los Angeles area director of operations, recruitment and propaganda for the White Aryan Resistance. Now working with the Simon Wiesenthal Center’s Task Force Against Hate, our speaker (who prefers that his name not be publicized) informs students, educators, universities, federal and local law enforcement officials, and the general public all over the country about his experiences in the white supremacy movement, how that movement recruits young people, and what brought about his change of heart. The Holocaust Commemoration will also feature a processional of Holocaust Survivors (as well as an informal discussion with them afterwards), a candle lighting ceremony, and a reading on the 60th anniversary of the deportation of the Jews of Hungary. For more information about this event, please contact the JCRC at 577-9393 or e-mail jscott@jfsa.org, visit www.jewishtucson.org, or contact the Temple office at (520) 327-4501. The following Friday, April 23rd, at 7:30 pm, is ARZA-Israel Shabbat. Temple Emanu-El is honored to welcome Jane Schapiro Brown, author of Inside a Class Action, The Holocaust and the Swiss Banks, and daughter-in-law of our members, Neal and Karen Brown, as our special guest speaker at Shabbat Services. Through her investigation of a 1966 case filed by Holocaust survivors against several Swiss banks, Jane Schapiro reveals how these banks concealed bank accounts owned by Holocaust victims, and how they acted as conduits for looted assets and German war profits. Don’t miss the details of her fascinating research! Marjorie Hochberg |
