Thoughts to Nosh On

May 2007

From the Desk of Rabbi Sharff

The history of interfaith dialogues though its origins dates back to the beginnings of the twentieth century, is actually a fairly recent phenomenon.  Interfaith conversations really began to pick up steam in the 1960's, and have been a significant part of the religious world ever since.  To this end, Temple Emanu-El 's clergy, staff, and even numerous congregants have participated in a number of interfaith activities, organizations and dialogues.  Temple Emanu-El and its representatives actively participate in Interfaith Community Services, the Jewish Presbyterian-Dialogue, the Jewish-Muslim Peace Walk, the Tucson Multi-Faith Alliance, the Pima County Interfaith Council, Tucson Interfaith HIV/AIDS Network (TIHAN) as well as numerous other organizations and efforts.

Some of these groups are designed to bring a diverse religious community together with goals of bringing justice, equality, and humanity to the greater Tucson community.  It is a lifelong effort that may never be fully realized, but is well worth the effort.

The other underlying theme is to gain understanding of other religions and religious ideas.  It is all part of a greater desire to comprehend what motivates our religious brethren, and to educate them in the beauty and complexities of our heritage and tradition.

Part of this effort has involved visitors to our wonderful congregation including students, parents, and congregants of other faith traditions.  In order to accomplish this goal, we have and continue to participate in worship exchanges whereby we welcome in visitors and visit other communities as well.  We have recently done this both with Christ Presbyterian as well as with St. Phillip's in the Hills.

This month Temple Emanu-El 's Rabbi Samuel M. Cohon and St. Phillip's in the Hills Rector John Kitagawa will have a pulpit exchange Friday, May 11th and Sunday, May 13th.  Please plan on attending these worship experiences as we continue to connect with those with whom we have so much in common.
