Matzoh-Ball Yankin' Rock & Roll!!
Avanim
Avanim represents a new development in music: a roots-based rock band reinventing Jewish music in an exciting yet authentic new way. Formed at Temple Emanu-El of Tucson in 2001, Avanim plays traditional and contemporary Jewish melodies with a full rock instrumentation and interpretation, bringing rhythmic vitality and melodic virtuosity to a 3800 year-old musical tradition, and invigorating Jewish music in an innovative and exciting way. Avanim released its first CD, “Judaism Rocks, Volume 1: A Rock Shabbat”, in 2003, and is at work on a second CD, “Judaism Rocks, Volume 2: Rocking the Festivals”.
Drawing on musical influences from the Doors to the Beatles to Shlomo Carlebach to the Cars, Avanim includes blues and jazz elements along with its rock-and-roll musical heart, creating a fun, energetic, and distinctly Jewish rock sound. Avanim is featured regularly in the Shabbat Rocks! services at Temple Emanu-El, and in local concert appearances.
Avanim is led by Rabbi Sam Cohon—the “singer with the band”—and Steve Schulman, lead guitarist and music director, and features Joe Millstone on rhythm guitar, Tommy Millstone on bass, Howard Salmon on drums, Carol Christofferson on clarinet, Chuck Benesh on keyboards, and vocalist Lindsey O’Shea.
