Drash for Shabbat Ha'Azinu
By Louise Greenfield- October 10, 2008

Moses calls out to both heaven and earth.
The Israelites are asked to listen.

From the Shema:

/s¨j¤t ²h±h 'bhœ¥vO¡t ²h±h 'k¥t¨r§G°h g©n§J

Hear, O Israel, Adonai is our God, Adonai is One

They listen to lessons from Moses as the words drop
As if from the sky.
He describes God as their desert protector,
Sustaining them with honey, cheese, meat, wheat, grapes and milk.
He describes God as their desert teacher,
Forming them into full being by nourishing them on wisdom.

Life and death are in God’s hands.

God is perfect, says Moses –
Just, faithful, moral and fair.
The destruction, he tells the Israelites,
That is your own.

Men and women alike, says Moses –
Godless, faithless, thoughtless, senseless,
Ungrateful, neglectful, superficial.
Yes that destruction is your own.

Parents and grandparents will talk about the twisted past, he says – a past that parents can describe but only grandparents can fully explain.

From the Amidah:

'o¤vh¯b‰c h¯b‰cˆk k¥tId thˆc¥nU ',Ic¨t h¥s§x©j r‡fIz±u 'k«F©v v¯b«e
/vŠc£v©t‰C In§J i‹gœ©n‰k

The creator of all things, who remembers the good deeds of the patriarchs and matriarchs and in love will bring a redeemer to their children’s children for the sake of the Divine Name

Moses relays God’s message saying hunger and disease will engulf them,
Poisonous creatures will threaten them.

When Moses completed his song to all Israel, he said to them, "Pay close attention to all the words through which I warn you today so that you will be able to instruct your children to carefully keep all the words of this Torah."

From the V’ahavtah:

'Q¤rœ¤S‹c W§T‰f†k‰cU 'Wœ¤,h‡c‰C W§T‰c¦J‰C 'oŠC ¨T§r‹C¦s±u 'Whœ®bŠc‰k o¨T±b³B¦J±u
/Wœ¤nUe‰cU 'W‰C‰f¨J‰cU

You shall teach them diligently to your sons and daughters and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise up.
