Purpose:

Temple Emanu-El's Davis Adult Library will support adult research in Jewish studies. It will have the best and most up-to-date reference materials and a strong non-fiction collection which will represent the best in Jewish writing. It will not have a popular reading collection but will have a collection of Jewish literature. In addition, we will maintain a collection of appropriate newspapers and magazines that deal with contemporary Jewish issues and times.

Policies:

  1. Books may be borrowed only by Temple members. They may be borrowed for a period of three weeks.
  2. All books checked out must be noted by Author, Title and Library of Congress number, borrower's name, phone number and return date.
  3. Borrowers will be charged replacement cost of books lost or not returned . There will also be a $10 processing fee.
  4. Late fees will not be charged.
  5. Books designated as reference materials (ie. dictionaries, encyclopedias, atlases, Talmud volumes) or as reserve materials for Adult Education classes offered at temple may not be removed form the library under any circumstances.
  6. Non-members may use the library resources on-site during the hours of operation.
  7. Because of space and staff limitations, the following policy for donations of books will be inaugurated:
    1. Books must be of Jewish content and match the above criteria.
    2. No gifts will be accepted unless the librarian approves the donation.
    3. Individuals making such donations will be informed of this policy.

Procedures:

In order to bring the collection up to date, all current holdings will be evaluated and inappropriate titles will be removed and sold at a book sale at some time in the future. All profits derived from the sale will be used to purchase new books. All books remaining after the sale will be donated to the Brandeis book sale.
