TEMPLE YOUTHOur TERY groups create significant Jewish experiences for Temple youth that will serve as a foundation for Jewish life. Our youth groups provide a variety of opportunities for preteens through teens to engage in Jewish life and develop and Jewish identity and commitment. TERY, as part of the Union for Reform Judaism, focuses on five key areas of Jewish content:
TERY is part of NFTY Southwest (North American Federation of Temple Youth). This region includes Reform youth groups from Arizona, New Mexico, El Paso, Texas, and Las Vegas, Nevada. As part of NFTY, TERY provides the same opportunities and experiences that are offered throughout North America for Reform Youth. See www.nfty.org for NFTY's nationwide activities. NFTY's annual summer regional event is Camp Swift. Each youth group fundraises money throughout the year to bring economically underprivileged children to camp for 5 days. Camp Swift is help at Camp Pearlstein, in the cool pines of Prescott, Arizona. The theme for the kids is always "all the love you can get, all the food you can eat". NFTYites not only raise the money to run the camp, but are counselors for these children as well. There are two five-day sessions of camp and the NFTYites as well as the children have an experience they will never forget. On a North American level, NFTY leads one of the largest trips to Israel every summer. NFTY also runs Kutz, a high school leadership camp in Warwick, NY. In addition, every two years the NFTY Convention brings over 800 NFTYites together for a long weekend of programming. Close to 1500 kids attended the West Coast Convention. On a local level, we strive to integrate Judaism and Judaism's values in all that we do. We are active in the community by doing social action activities and participating in events sponsored by the Tucson Jewish community. TERY involves students from 9th to 12th grades in Jewish social action, educational, and just plain fun activities locally, regionally and nationally. It's a great way for high school age students to meet other Jewish students with similar interests and backgrounds, and form Jewish friendships that last throughout life. Jr. TERY, for 6th, 7th and 8th grade students, gives middle school youth the same opportunities on a slightly smaller scale. This is a great way for Temple Emanu-El Jewish youth to grow from the Religious and Hebrew School environment into more active involvement in the broader community. Pre-TERY is our youth group for students in the 4th and 5th grades. These children have monthly opportunities during the year for fun social activities. Events such as roller skating, ice skating, golf, and bowling have been scheduled throughout the year.
